The tighter our homes, the more important is the indoor air quality. Normal a/c air filters deal only with particulates, but what about chemical and biological airborne pollution?
Pure-Light to the Rescue
Pure-light, like so many things was born from a NASA project. In outer space you cannot open the windows for fresh air, and they had a mold problem in the space station. Cleaning with chemicals might kill astronauts as well as germs. Not ideal.
Titanium DiOxide was the answer, it can be made into a coating and it is activated by light. Pure-Light Technology Group has developed it into several practical product lines. There is a coating for the walls in places where contamination or just smells are a major problem, anything from locker rooms to bathrooms, to medical facilities. You can use it as lighting, and you can buy the bulbs here, or, for larger accounts, reach out to us. We can provide custom orders.
For the sciency types among us, here is the explanation, but in simplest terms it boils down to this, the light bulbs are LEDs, so energy-efficient, but the coating is TiO2, and, activated by light it generates super-oxides which in turn deal with any airborne chemical or biological contamination. If the problem is severe, or in a medical setting where Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) are an issue, you can use Sanicoat on the walls, to reinforce the effect. This can drastically simplify maintenance in hospitals, for the coating can last for years, and it is activated whenever the lights are on.
Here is a testimonial from a user in Connecticut:
I have had PLT lighting in my 1907 historic home in Essex in my basement, attic and bathrooms for several months and, apart from the major energy saving, it seems to have kept away mold and odors ….but not mice!
The Basics: Plants!
The basic recommendation for healthy indoor air is plants. And there is some knowhow involved, but overall it is pretty straightforward. Some plants are simply better at cleaning the air than others, so do some research. One other thing to keep in mind is that most plants breathe in CO2 and produce Oxygen, but there are some plants that produce CO2 by day and Oxygen at night, and you want them in your bedroom, but not in your office.
Here are two sources:
- The book to get: How to Grow Fresh Air: 50 house plants that purify your home or office. This is the classic. There are many more books, but this one is the place to start.
- There was a recent article on Newsbreak, The Indoor Plants That Purify Air The Fastest In New York, of August 21, 2025.
